A Personal Commentary
Like many other professions, the client has many choices when it comes to deciding on a hypnotherapist. However, like a shoe which will fit or not, consider this when it comes to hypnotherapy, the practitioner and the perspective client need to “fit.” Sometimes, you just cannot put your finger on it. It could be that human beings emanate a chemistry or energy beyond verbal communication which lets the client know, “I have you covered.” Here is an example on a much more everyday occurrence. Do you continue seeing a doctor who just “does not fit? Probably not. The same applies to hairdressers and lawyers. I propose another idea and that is that the prior career or livelihood of the hypnotist is of significance to the service which is provided.
For example, a hypnotist who in a previous career guided, counseled, mediated, and did crisis intervention for other human beings before becoming a hypnotist has my vote. In other words, during my educational and administrative career in a very poor and service deprived community, I was called upon to take action on a daily basis to bring relief to human suffering disguised as an ongoing addiction, an abused child, extreme poverty and devastating parenting and relationships, to name a few. On many occasions, I mediated between Child Protective Services, the school, and the community. Again, a very frequent scenario. I guess what I am trying to say is that exposure and call to action in “the trenches of human misery” counts for somethings beyond a hypnosis certification. This experience has made me a more compassionate, understanding, and holistic therapist. Of course, I am not downplaying the credentials of the hypnotist. That is important as well. My advice is before you choose a hypnotist, read about who they are and what they did before becoming a therapist. This information is readily available in the “About” and “Services” pages on their website.
